Low Back Pain And Sciatica Treatment With Acupuncture In Vietnam
A range of pain in the lumbar region — between the hips and ribs — is often referred to as lumbago or lumbar spine syndrome. When pain radiates into the buttock or leg, it's called sciatica, linked to irritation of the sciatic nerve, the body's largest nerve, running from the lower spine through the pelvis and buttocks.

Causes of Low Back Pain
Low back pain is usually associated with muscle tension and reduced mobility. Left unaddressed, it can become a self-perpetuating cycle: pain leads to a guarded, forward-leaning posture and reduced range of motion, which further loads the muscles and joints and intensifies the pain over time.
- Persistent overloading of the joint
- Low mood, pessimism, and dissatisfaction
- Prolonged sitting or standing
- Incorrect exercise habits
- Psychological stress
The fascial picture: why the pain often isn't only in the back
Modern fascial anatomy adds a useful layer to this. The low back sits along what's often called the Posterior Line — a continuous band of myofascial tissue running from the soles of the feet, up the back of the legs and spine, over the head, to the eyebrows. A stubbornly tight calf, an old ankle injury, or restriction anywhere else along this line can quietly load the lumbar spine for months or years before it ever produces noticeable back pain. This is why needling the calves and hamstrings often does as much for a low back complaint as needling the low back directly, and why a thorough assessment looks well beyond the site of pain.
The thoracolumbar fascia — a broad sheet of connective tissue spanning the low back — and the quadratus lumborum muscle also carry a significant share of the tension in this area, and restrictions along other nearby lines can add pressure indirectly.
Treatment approach

At Maple Vietnam, acupuncture aims to interrupt this cycle by stimulating points that improve blood circulation to overstressed tissue, releasing tension and producing an analgesic, endorphin-driven relaxation response. Needling of both local points (around the low back) and points further along the affected fascial line encourages the smooth flow of Qi and blood together, in keeping with the traditional aim of Yin-Yang balance.
As the cycle eases, mobility improves and pain reduces or resolves — though maintaining the balance between work, rest, and movement afterward matters for keeping it that way.
Preventing low back pain and sciatica
- Maintain a healthy body weight — every extra kilo adds load to the back and joints
- Exercise regularly to strengthen the abdominal and back muscles that stabilise the spine
- Avoid long periods of sitting; stand, walk, and stretch often
- Manage stress — mental tension affects the back as much as physical load does
- Wear supportive footwear; tight shoes, poor insoles, or high heels place uneven strain on the spine
