Treatment of Lymphedema

The treatment (or management) of Lymphedema is the Complete Decongestive Therapy with Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Compression Therapy, Movement and exercise in Compression, Elevation of the affected limb and Skincare. But there are a few advices how you can support the decongestion and to maintain the results of the Complete Decongestive Therapy: maple-healthcare-nutrition
  • Good nutrition is important for overall health, weight management, and in the prevention of chronic diseases. It is equally important for people who suffer from lymphedema, the primary symptoms of which include swelling, pain and tenderness, all of which can be reduced through proper nutrition and exercise. The advice to “Eat Natural as Possible” and “Avoid Processed Foods” is in general for every person, edema sufferer or not, recommended.
  • Excess weight and Body Mass Index issues should be solved through individual plans.
  • Giving the body its required nutrition through a varied diet rich in grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes is essential, as well as to limit (or even completely avoid) saturated fats and animal products, such as meat, beef, chicken, fish, seafood, milk, dairy products and eggs.
  • The required amount of salt we usually reach through a varied diet, therefore it is advisable to do not add salt or salty sauces to your meals.

  • Drinking plenty or adequate amounts of water is also for lymphedema a recommended advice. In order for protein to be removed from your tissues, it needs water to move it, and adequate fluids in the body removes impurities from the blood. A general rule is to drink at least 30ml per kilogram of your body weight (e.g. 60kg x 30ml = 1.800ml = 1,8l or 80kg x 30ml = 2.400ml = 2,4l). If one drinks to less, the body will start to “save or store” water which could lead to deterioration of edemas. Avoided should be alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks, due to their dehydrating effects. But also an excessive overdo of water could increase the filtration of your blood capillaries and therefore the 30ml per kilogram of one’s bodyweight should not be overstated.
  • Every Increase of the blood circulation can and will increase the load of fluid and proteins of the affected limb. An avoidance of warming/heating/cooling applications, creams, gels, sunbath, electrotherapeutic applications, conventional massage therapy (especially too strong massage therapies), warm/hot showering, exhausting sport/exercise, Cao Gio/Gua Sha Fa/Scraping and so on, is crucial for the maintenance and decongestion of Lymphedemas! This avoidance is most important for patients in later Stages of Lymphedema. Latent Lymphedema, with no or light symptoms, still can use Sauna, perform more strenuous exercises or get gentle massage therapies.
  • Skin Care is an important part of Lymphedema Management to reduce your risk of infection by avoiding potential trauma or injury. Apply moisturizer daily to prevent chapping and chafing of the skin. Use natural skin care oils or perfume and alcohol free body lotions. Pay careful attention to nail care. Do not cut your cuticles or allow a manicurist to do so. Use special care with razors to avoid nicks and skin irritation. If possible, avoid punctures such as injections and blood draws. Wear gloves during activities that may cause skin injury (i.e., washing dishes, gardening, working with tools, using chemicals such as detergent).

  • If scratches or punctures to the skin occur, wash the area right away with soap and water, apply antibiotics, and continue to observe carefully for any signs of infection (i.e., redness, warmth). If a rash, itching, redness, pain, increased skin temperature, increased swelling, fever or flu-like symptoms occur, contact your physician or pharmacist immediately for early treatment of a possible infection, most often erysipelas. But don’t worry, through early treatment with antibiotics (commonly penicillin) this infection will go away in a few days. If your edema is increased you can increase the frequency of Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatments and if required use Compression bandaging after the infection is under control.
  • Compression Stockings and Compression Bandaging are an essential part of Lymphedema treatment. If you suffer from Lymphedema you are advised to wear your compression stocking throughout the day and just take it off while showering and sleeping, or any time you lie down, such as a nap at lunch time. The stockings will help to maintain and improve the recent state of your Lymphedema. Optional are individual Compression Bandages required.
Arm and Leg edema, recommended exercises while wearing compression stockings or bandages:
