Maple Healthcare Vietnam offers you a combination approach for decongestive Edema treatment. These therapies help to reduce the swelling (Edema), to relieve the pain and to restore joint function and mobility.
What is an Edema?
Edema is the medical term for extreme swelling and fluid retention in the body. This includes lymphedema, chronic venous insufficiency edema, rheumatic joint diseases, post-cancer, post-operative and post-traumatic edema.
What is lymphatic system and lymphedema?
- Lymphatic system
The lymphatic system is a part of the immune system and it’s closely related to the bloodstream and transports fluids from the arms and legs back to the body center. Lymph is a clear fluid that travels via the lymphatic vessels, containing water, protein, cells, and fats.
- Lymphedema
Lymphedema is a disorder while the lymphatic vessels are damaged. That can be innate or caused through surgeries, injuries, germs, cancer or parasites. The main symptom of lymphedema is a swelling in a limb or another part of the body. At first, the swelling may come and go. Also it may get worse during the day and then go down overnight. Without treatment, it will usually become more severe and persistent. Limited joint function, frequent skin infections, skin elasticity changes and heavy sensation up to very painful limbs can occur.
The swelling caused by lymphedema ranges from mild, hardly noticeable changes in the size and weight of your arm or leg to extreme changes that make the limb hard to use. Lymphedema can caused by cancer treatment may not occur until months or years after treatment. But a prevention therapy with Manual Lymphatic Drainage and if required compression therapy is highly recommended.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a particular form of medical massage. Through MLD the accumulated liquid in the tissues (edema) should be encouraged to flow. It is, in other words, a form of therapy for decongestion of edema or swellings. These can occur through injuries, surgeries, cancer diseases, chronic vein insufficiencies or lymphatic vessel damages.
In Germany and Austria plays the Manual Lymphatic Drainage since the 1960s an important role in today’s rehabilitation but unfortunately in other countries is the MLD less well-known. Now, our German specialist brings this unique edema treatment to Maple Healthcare Vietnam.
With more pronounced lymphatic problems like Lymphedema, the Manual lymphatic Drainage is combined with compression bandaging, customized compression stocking, skin care and exercise therapy.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage therapy
Objectives in the treatment of post traumatic and post-operative edema
After a trauma or a surgery the body tissues respond with an inflammatory response. The symptoms are redness, swelling, heat, pain and a limited function. The manual lymphatic drainage aims to remove these inflammatory mediators faster.
The advantages are:
- A faster Decongestion
- Reduction of Swelling
- A faster Pain Relief,
- An improved Mobility
- An improved Wound Healing
- Muscle Tension release
After surgeries the scar healing benefits from the effects of manual lymphatic drainage are also noticeable.
How to treat a Lymphedema (Swelling)?
With Complex Decongestive Therapy!
This includes Manual Lymphatic Drainage, compression bandage or compression stockings, exercise in compression and skin care. For lymphedema, complex decongestive therapy is the therapy of choice. In addition to the Manual Lymphatic Drainage there is a compression protocol for the treatment of a lymphedema. The compression bandage or stocking increases the tissue pressure and this reduces a new collection of fluids and the through lymphatic drainage moved fluids can’t flow back. Also increased are the absorption and the transport of fluids through the vein.
The compression bandage therapy
The Complex Decongestive Therapy is a 2-phases therapy:
The phase 1 means decongestion through daily Manual Lymphatic Drainage, skin care and Compression bandage or stocking.
The phase 2 means keeping the condition stable through Manual Lymphatic Drainage as required and Compression Stockings.
If you suffer from a Lymphedema or another Edema related to lymph system damage, like chronic venous insufficiency, post-operative edema, post-traumatic edema, post-cancer treatment or rheumatic disease come in to Maple Healthcare Vietnam to receive a specific adapted treatment from our trained Edema therapists.
